Since 1968 The New York Knicks have graced the court at Madison square garden every season. Even though the franchise hasn’t raised a banner since 1973 it’s still one of the most famous teams in the NBA. When you consider the aspect of popularity and the fact New York city is one of the most expensive cities in the nation, the result is a lot of unreasonable ticket prices.
Madison Square Garden dubbed the moniker of “The Most Famous Arena In The World” from hosting Pope Francis to UFC events and the late great muhammad ali this area has hosted all of them and more. Can the name alone justify the prices set? In today’s time where the New York Knicks are a team in contention people are flocking to see them play. The demand is there.
The knicks vs the lakers on february 1st 2026 was a game that was anticipated because of the chance that it could be lebron James last time playing in madison square Garden this was not confirmed by him or the teams. According to Kurt Helin on Yahoo sports “Just the average ticket price for this game is close to $900, according to Gametime.”
Being a team that plays well means playoffs and this means an absurd amount of money on tickets. The Knicks had a time in between 2013-2020 where the team didn’t reach the playoffs .A lot of fans grew up without seeing their team in post season action. Ever since the 2022 season the Knicks have constantly been in the playoffs but can the people who’ve waited so long to see their team prosper see them in action. Game 4 of the 2025 conference semifinals against the Boston Celtics was being played in Madison Square garden “ the average ticket sale on Wednesday was $1,716, up nearly 215% from the $545 average on May 1, according to Victory Live” according to Forbes
Sports have the power to bring people together and make bounds stronger. A reason a son picks his favorite team most of the time is based on what the past generation chose. Now how can a family go together if“a family of four would have to pay nearly $2,000 to cheer the Knicks from the nosebleed sections of The World’s Most Famous Arena — and that’s before buying hot dogs, pretzels and beer.” Not only are fans being priced out so are a long line of generational fans. The Knicks aren’t the only team in madison square garden. The NHL’s New York Rangers are ranked “third most expensive NHL venue for a family of four”. This problem affects sports in general.
The revenue earned from ticket sales and concessions etc, puts the Knicks as number 2 out of the other 32 teams in the NBA in value and revenue in the 2024-2025 season according to CNBC. The revenue a team gets translates to getting better players and overall strengthening the team. What fans care about the most is how entering the product is and winning is pretty entertaining. The last couple of years even after disappointing exits in the playoffs fans stay loyal with an optimistic attitude. It’s been proven that our monetary support has influenced the product to become better.
Can all the blame be put on the Knicks federation for these ticket prices, in a day where scalping tickets is more normal than ever. This is such an issue to the point where government officials feel the need to step in. The plan is for a state senator to bring forward legislation that, if passed, we can see a world where tickets in New York can only be resold for what they were bought for. While this wouldn’t solve much because the base prices are already high it can help regulate when prices if they do increase. When scalpers re-sell for a crazy amount it gives an opportunity for these venues to also raise their prices without facing full backlash. Its clear prices won’t go down anytime soon seats are being filled and profit is going up.
